Oct 12 – The Secret Formula, Vivino & more…

Joining me this week is author James Gabler with his new novel “The Secret Formula
About the author:
James Gabler is the author of Passions: The Wines and Travels of Thomas Jefferson, winner of the Veuve Clicquot 1995 Wine Book of the Year, and a Robert M. Parker, Jr. selection, Wine Book of the Year; An Evening with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson: Dinner, Wine, and Conversation, 2nd edition; Be Your Own Wine Expert; Wine into Words: A History and Bibliography of Wine Books in the English, Language, 2nd edition, 2004 Gourmand USA Wine Book of the Year; God’s Devil: A Papal Quest, a novel; co-author of the play, Sex, Politics and the American Revolution. Gabler lectures extensively on Jefferson and Franklin throughout the United States.

The Secret Formula

The prize is the Coca-Cola secret formula and money beyond the wildest dreams. Can a young black woman and a limousine driver pull off the greatest heist of all time and walk away multimillionaires? Alex Ivanovich lives and works in Atlanta as a limousine driver. He has a degree in chemical engineering and was trained in espionage and the martial arts. Trapped in a blue collar job, his life changes when he discovers that The Coca-Cola Company has never legally owned its secret formula. Sensing a once in a lifetime opportunity, he buys the formula from a destitute descendent of the formula’s original inventor. Alex crafts a plan to force The Coca-Cola Company to buy his formula. The plan is based on his KBG experience that great wealth and power breed arrogance and indiscretion, which lead to conduct that must be kept secret at all costs. Alex sets out to find what secrets Coca-Cola’s top executives harbor and use those secrets as the catalysts for the sale of his formula.

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2010 Decoy Napa Valley Red Wine
Alluring aromas of blackberry, blueberry, black currant and raspberry are supported by holiday spice notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom. On the palate, this wine is lush and juicy, with a fleshy mid-palate and soft, velvety tannins. Subtle oak-inspired elements of cedar and walnut accentuate the rich dark fruit flavors, giving them an enticing berry pie/cobbler quality.

Oct 5 – eatingrules.com

A very interesting show this week with my guest Andrew Wilder!  Andrew is the brains and motivation behind what is rapidly becoming  very popular annual October event and generating a lot of buzz.  It’s “October Unprocessed 2013!  It all started in 2009 when Andrew asked the question ” What would happen if I went for an entire month without eating processed foods?”

If this idea interests you, then do it today, it’s not too late.  If you do a month, a week or even a day, it might just change  your life.  Visit Andrews blog www.eatingrules.com and follow him on Face Book to learn more and get involved.  You have nothing to lose but weight, unhealthy eating habits and more!

The “Kitchen Test” Definition

The first question I’m always asked is, “How do you define processed?”  Obviously there’s a wide range of implications in that word, and we will probably each define it slightly differently for ourselves. My definition is this:

Unprocessed food is any food that could be made by a person with reasonable skill in a home kitchen with whole-food ingredients.  I call it “The Kitchen Test.” If you pick up something with a label (if it doesn’t have a label, it’s probably unprocessed), and find an ngredient you’d never use in your kitchen and couldn’t possibly make yourself from the whole form, it’s processed.

It doesn’t mean you actually have to make it yourself, it just means that for it to be considered “unprocessed” that you could, in theory, do so.

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2010 Bodegas Alto Moncayo “Veraton”
This inky red is 100% Grenache, and it offers a heady bouquet evokes ripe red berries, anise, mocha and pungent fresh flowers. Supple and sweet on entry, then more structured in the middle, offering deep, mineral-accented dried strawberry and cherry liqueur flavors. It takes a spicy turn on the long, sappy finish, which echoes the pure red berry qualities. The 2010 bottling has not yet been professionally reviewed, but the 2009 vintage garnered 91 and 92 points from Wine Spectator and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, respectively.

Good Life guy loves this wine, it’s not bargain basement, Alto Moncayo has a less expensive Garnacha base wine and one more expensive.  This wine over delivers and is worth every penny.

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week from Hungary:
2011 Count Karolyi Gruner Veltliner

The 2011 vintage is bone dry and light gold in color. Aromas of green apples and gooseberries fill the nose while on the palate, it is balanced by a delicate fruitiness. This is a fresh, zingy wine that shows crisp acidity, making it a perfect food wine.

Sep 14 – Peace Tree Brewing

The run-up to the 13th Annual Midwest Beerfest continues with this show!

My guest in the first half is Dan McKay Vice President of Peace Tree Brewing in Knoxville Iowa.  Peace Tree is a relatively new Craft Brewing operation and their excellent brews are new to Kansas and this years Midwest Beerfest.

Brewing great full-flavored beer is our passion, but we are also passionate about where we have come from and where we are going. As you might be able to tell, the name of our beers have connections to the places in our past, especially derived from memories and places in our community and our state.

Our name, Peace Tree Brewing Company, is also a reminder, a prompting of our past where different cultures met to discuss, trade, and come to agreements. The Peace Tree is a historic grand sycamore tree that was located near the town of Red Rock under what is now Lake Red Rock. Supposedly the old sycamore was a place where Indians met for generations, then became a meeting place for fur traders. Indian treaties were negotiated here and there is some speculation that it marks the Red Rock Line.  www.peacetreebrewing.com

Peace Tree Brewings Beers will be featured at one of the three Midwest Beerfest dinners at Larkspur.  To see the menu for all three, go to:  www.midwestbeerfest.com

Remember, reservations are a must…call today the dinners are filling up fast!

We’ll finish up with some more info about this year’s Beerfest and of course a great wine of the week.

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2012 Cedrus le Rosé

100% Negrette grapes grown on gravelly, stony soils in the vicinity of Toulouse France.  This Rose displays floral and fruity aromas reminiscent of fresh raspberries.  Crisp and lively, it is a perfect aperitif wine and pairs nicely with grille dpoultry or charcuterie.

I love this wine!  While many still look down their nose at “pink wine”, products like this will surely raise the bar for dry rosé.
