Aug 17 – EATS, Green Chiles & S. African Sav Blanc

First up is Mary Rolph Lamontagne with her new book “EATS – Enjoy All the Seconds.”  Mary says:

My inspiration for this book was a lightbulb moment while working at a bush camp in Botswana. We were low on stock and the leftovers were building up in the fridge. High paying guests were expecting a memorable meal and the rest is history…

EATS offers:

27 master recipes
108 alternate recipes
135 recipes in all

• Cut, peel, purée, poach or freeze 12 different fruits to take full advantage of their flavour.

• Roast, steam, bake, braise, sauté or grate 15 different vegetables to then reinvent them into other recipes.

• Learn tips and tricks to be used while cooking to reuse food items that might have been thrown out.

• Acquire tips on how to buy, why to buy and how to store 27 different fruits and vegetables.

• Pick up green tips on growing fruits and vegetables in gardens or in containers.

In addition to a diverse and colorful collection of recipes, EATS also provides practical solutions for saving and reusing ingredients to create new meals. Mary’s simple tips on reinventing leftovers will help you eliminate waste, save money, and challenge your culinary creativity.  For more ideas or questions on reusing leftovers, visit SavourandSave.com

In the second half Marty Johnson from Johnson’s Garden Center will be telling us all about the August 24 “Food Truck Iron ChileHead Cookoff” where 5 of Wichita’s top Food Trucks will compete for top honors with recipes featuring fresh Hatch Green Chiles.

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2011 Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa
This racy bottling single-handedly put South Africa on the map as a source of world class Sauvignon Blanc. One of the Cape’s most heralded and sought-after wines, it garners 90+ scores vintage after vintage. Vivid citrus and tropical fruit aromas give way to zesty flavors of green fig, lemon-lime and passion fruit, with grassy, herbal undertones and a complex, chalky minerality. Briny saline undercurrents cut through the racy, mouthwatering finish.

This wine has well-developed flavors, from long hang times that the cool growing season allowed. This vibrant, engaging wine is bursting with mouth-watering fruit and lively acid. Flavors of lemon, apple, pear and apricot pop on the palate, before subtle, creamy butter and meringue notes and a luscious, refreshing finish.
