    Maximilian & Guy

    Maximilian & Guy

First up is Maximilian Riedel.  Max was in Wichita several weeks ago and I had the pleasure of sitting next to him at lunch served by Scotch & Sirloin.  In addition to our love of wine and fine crystal, we both have a love of speed.  Mine is centered around airplanes and but both love exotic fast cars.  Later that evening at the Hereford House I got to see Max in action during the Riedel Sommelier tasting.  As always at these glass specific comparison tastings, the crowd was amazed at the difference quality stemware makes for wine enjoyment.  His father Georg would be proud!

    Scotch & Sirloin

Maximilian J. Riedel, appointed CEO and President of RIEDEL Crystal in 2013, is the 11th generation of the family-owned company based in Kufstein, Austria. Best known for the revolutionary stemless “O“ glassware series, which he designed and marketed in 2004, Maximilian has earned accolades from The Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco MoMA, the Corning Museum of Glass. Today, in addition to his leadership of RIEDEL Crystal worldwide, he is the principal designer of the glassware company‘s decanters. Maximilian further strengthened RIEDEL‘s commitment to the hospitality industry by the introduction of the RIEDEL Restaurant and Restaurant Sommeliers lines, which provide the company‘s glassware at lower cost and greater durability to restaurants and hotels, allowing greater access to beverage directors‘ favorite “wine tools“.

In the second half I’ll be talking to Natasha McGuinness about her new book ” Local Eats London.”

Interweaving Danielle Kroll’s whimsical illustrations with the informative, humorous reminiscences of author Natasha McGuinness’ culinary journeys in the vibrant city on the Thames, LOCAL EATS LONDON: Bangers & Mash, Pasties, Jaffa Cake and Other London Favorites is a charming guide to the traditional (and often underrated) British fare found in the markets, pubs, tea shops and cafes of the city. This easy-to-carry, mini tome will help travelers who are seeking the most delicious food the city has to offer—whether on the go, in need of tea and a nibble, or ready to sit down to a leisurely meal.

From high tea to late night snacks, and every meal in between, this enchanting guide is all any food-loving traveler will need to enjoy the wide variety of unique and tasty fare available in the capital. Rather than a restaurant guide, it is a description of the sometimes oddly named, traditional foods visitor will find in the markets, shops, pubs and restaurants of London. The author’s delectable adventures coupled with Danielle Kroll’s delightful images create a lyrical and witty chronicle of the delicious discoveries a foreigner will experience in this cosmopolitan city.

Chapters include Morning Food, Savory Food, Pub Food, Small Plates, Picnic

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
    2015 JAM Cellars Butter Chardonnay

According to the winery: “Rich, bold and luscious, this is an easy-to-love creamy California Chardonnay. Made in the tradition of Californian winemaking, the fruit we choose has juicy, ripe, stone fruit and baked-lemon aromas. Cold fermented to the perfect, rich creaminess and aged in our own blend of oak, gives this wine a lovely, long, vanilla finish that’s uniquely Butter!”

According to Good Life Guy:  This wine is a great value and has all the bells & whistles of chardonnay at twice the cost.  Buy it by the case as your house wine.  It’s a flavorful beauty!

Jun 4 – Coomber Family Ranch Winery

If you missed it LIVE… Click here to listen or download this show!

It’s always fun to talk to winemakers, learn their background, winemaking goals and styles and taste some of their handywork.  This week my guest is Skip Coomber from Coomber Family Ranch winery.  Skip was in Wichita a couple of months ago hosting a very special dinner at Scotch & Sirloin.  I had the pleasure of sitting next to skip and talking wine while enjoying many of his products and the great food at Scotch & Sirloin.  Follow Coomber Family Winery on Facebook.

    Skip Says:

“In 2009 we started out making small batches of wine for our own enjoyment at Terravant, a fantastic wine-making facility in Buellton, California (a city made famous by the wine movie SIDEWAYS). We have an extremely small production of our Private Reserve wines, which we make in the style that we personally like.  We hope that you also like the style of our wines.

“Our Vintner’s Collection wines are created from grapes sourced from multiple vineyards and blended (still all one variety of grape) to create a particular style of wine that has solid body and fruit so that it drinks well with food, but is also not too heavy, so that it drinks well alone. Many restaurants pour our Vintner’s Collection wines as their “by-the-glass” offerings.”

“Coomber Family Ranch wine is about the love we have for wine as well as the love we have for our animals. We have decided to use our wine sales to support animal welfare organizations.  So, we donate at least 5% of all revenues generated (not just of profits) to animal welfare organizations.”  Learn more about Skip and family here!

In the second half Andrie Krahl, Executive Director of the Kansas DUI Impact Center will join us and we will be telling you about the 2016 “HOPE IN SPRING GALA”  This event supports victims of DUI crime and raises impaired driving awareness in Kansas.

Then it’s all about Kansas Beef Month!

Kansas is home to some of the highest quality cattle in the United States, and the state’s ranches and feedyards play a key role in the state’s agricultural success.  I’ll be talking to  Jamie Lindamood about the “Day at the Farm Tour” held last month in Greenwood County to educate a large group of folks about the production of Beef in Western Kansas.

Then I’ll be talking to Kevin Thielen, Executive Director of the Kansas Beef Council about Beef Month.

According to the High Plains AG Journal, May 7, 2016
The Kansas beef industry is vital to the Kansas economy, generating over $9 billion annually. Kansas is home to 6.25 million cattle as of Jan. 1, which is more than twice the human population of 2.9 million. Kansas also ranks third nationally in the value of beef and veal exported, at $787.7 million in 2014. The industry also supports more than 48,400 jobs in Kansas.

“We are very proud of our beef heritage. Kansas is one of the most important beef states in the country, and is known across the globe for the high quality of its beef,” said Secretary of Agriculture Jackie McClaskey. “The beef industry is a critical and significant part of the Kansas economy, and impacts all local communities as you’ll find beef cattle in every single county in the state. It’s also important for consumers to remember that beef is a very important part of a heart-healthy and nutritious diet. We encourage all Kansans to join us in celebrating Beef Month.”

Beef fits into healthy lifestyles as a rich source of nutrients, especially protein. A 3-oz. serving of lean beef has less than 10 grams of fat, 150 calories and less than 95 mg. of cholesterol, while providing nearly half of the daily value for protein.

Kansas has historically been a leader in beef production and remains at the heart of the U.S. beef industry. Warm up your grill this May and celebrate Kansas Beef Month.
