Aug 13 – Meathead Goldwyn BBQ & Grilling

If you missed it LIVE… Click here to listen or download this show!

First up is Meathead Goldwyn with his latest book “Meathead: The Science of Great Barbecue and Grilling.”

The first book to apply the latest scientific research to America’s favorite form of cooking, by the curator of the highly successful website Amazingribs.com, with 175 sure-fire recipes

To become a pitmaster or grillmaster, or even if your goal is to simply improve your cooking, nothing is more crucial than understanding the science behind the interaction of food, fire, heat, and smoke. This book is the definitive guide to the concepts, methods, and equipment of barbecue and grilling. The price can easily be justified if I keep you from messing up one dinner.  And along the way Meathead will shatter many of the myths that stand in the way of perfection.

Aug 6 – Sullivan Vineyards

Ross Sullivan

If you missed it LIVE… Click here to listen or download this show!

I love spending time with proprietors and winemakers!  If you can’t do it in person, the next best thing is listening to me chatting with those who make it happen.  This show will be one of those…my first guest this week is Ross Sullivan from Sullivan Vineyards and Winery. I met Ross at a private tasting here in Wichita a few months back and have been looking forward to sharing the family story.

Jim Sullivan

This family owned winery produced its first vintage in 1981 (prior to that the Sullivan’s were producing grapes for other local wineries). Sullivan was founded by the late Jim Sullivan and his wife JoAnna. Jim was a graphic design artist and worked with several well known rock bands in the 50’s and 60’s. His daughter Kelleen is an artist in her own right, mostly wine related and her pieces command hefty prices. Their initial search for land took them to many areas in California.  The family finally settled on the prime Rutherford bench land which is where their vineyards and winery are located.

Today, Sullivan Vineyards & Winery remains one of the few family owned estates in Napa Valley.

Inheriting their parents’ vision, Sean, Ross, and Kelleen have combined the beauty of their unique family estate with the integrity of world-class winegrowing and professional management. The combination speaks to today’s Sullivan renaissance.

Later in the second half Marty Johnson from Johnson’s Garden Centers joins us to talk about what has become one of the most fun seasonal events here in the flat lands.  It all started years ago when Marty and gang began importing Hatch Green Chile peppers from New Mexico.  A few years ago they decided to host an event that would feature the growing number of Wichita Food Trucks and local breweries.  It’s time for the 4th Ever “Iron Chile Head 2016!”  Click the logo to get tickets and learn more at Johnson

Local food trucks and brewers have been busy creating recipes and brewing their own unique take on yummy creations using roasted Hatch Green Chile from Johnson’s Garden Center in preparation for this competition. LIVE music, the smell of roasting peppers, great food and craft beer, you can only improve on this FUN day by taking home some fresh roasted peppers.

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2012 Sullivan Rutherford Estate Merlot, Napa Valley

Merlot13FtDense fruit embodies our 2012 Merlot.  Raspberry and cherry aromas give the wine a sense of brightness, but complex notes of cocoa and spice let you know that this wine is not to be trifled with.  Big and juicy, there is no lack of fruit with this beauty while a hint of sweet vanilla adds a sense of pleasure.  Well integrated, the acidity will provide length and focus to this powerhouse of a merlot.  Lay this one down for 10 years or more, as you will be able to enjoy this jewel for years to come!

Jul 23 – Ethical Meat Handbook

If you missed it LIVE… Click here to listen or download this show!

My guest this week is Meredith Leigh author of “The Ethical Meat Handbook.”  Meredith is a food and farming specialist who has worked as a butcher, chef, teacher, and homesteader, all in search of realistic solutions for sustainable food.

Image: front coverA holistic food manifesto, the The Ethical Meat Handbook describes how we might endeavor to get good meat on our plates, and empower ourselves to own more of the process. Part philosophy, part technical instruction, and part memoir, this book gives eating more substance and soul. Included are discussions of economy, environment, agriculture, and social synergy, as well as complete instruction on whole animal butchery of beef, pork, lamb, and poultry. All this, plus a complete chapter on charcuterie, and over 100 delicious recipes make this a must-have for everyone’s culinary collection.

Nutrition, environmental impact, ethics, sustainability—it seems like there’s no end to the factors we must consider when we think about our food. At the center of the dietary storm is animal-based agriculture. Was your beef factory-farmed or pasture-raised? Did your chicken free range, or was it raised in a battery cage? Have you, in short, met your meat?

Most efforts to unravel the complexities of the production and consumption of animal protein tend to pit meat eaters and vegetarians against each other. The Ethical Meat Handbook seeks a middle ground, arguing that by assuming full responsibility for the food on our fork, and more importantly, the route by which it gets there, animals can be an optimal source of food, fiber, and environmental management.

Meredith Leigh

“Over the past 13 years, I’ve worked as a farmer, butcher, chef, teacher, non-profit executive director, and writer,  all in pursuit of sustainable food. I’ve developed a farmer co-op, founded and catalyzed non-profit ventures, grown vegetables, flowers, and meats, owned and managed a retail butcher shop, and more. I’m a single mom, and, I’m  the author of  The Ethical Meat Handbook: A Complete Guide to Home Butchery, Charcuterie, and Cooking for the Conscious Omnivore.  Above all, I am committed to real, good food, as a means to connect with people, animals, and plants, learn new skills, create intentionally, stay inspired, and experience deliciousness.”
