    Alexana Winery was born of Dr. Madaiah Revana’s love of the great wines of Burgundy. In the spring of 2005, Dr. Revana began a search for both the ideal region and an experienced winemaker with the goal of producing Pinot Noirs that could rival those from Burgundy. His search ended in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, where he met Lynn Penner-Ash. Alexana is named after Dr. Revana’s daughter, Alexandra.

    Just came back from a week in Puerto Vallarta and have been enjoying classic Mexican cuisine all week.  The fun continues today with my guest Pati Jinich author of Mexican Today – New and Rediscovered Recipes for Contemporary Kitchens.  Intriguing recipes for everyday meals from the host of the PBS series Pati’s Mexican Table.

    This show ended up being all about the Old Town Farmers Market Iron Chef Competition

    This Saturday will be the 14th Annual Iron Chef Competition at the OTFM. Four of Wichita’s top chefs will be using a “secret ingredient” and products from the market as they accept this culinary challenge. Their creations will be rated by a panel of esteemed judges.

    This year’s contest will feature chef Paul Freimuth from Harvest Kitchen/Bar in the Hyatt, who will be defending his 2015 title. The other competitors will be Travis Joy, who also works at Harvest, Josh Rathbun, the new chef at the Ambassador’s Siena Tuscan Steakhouse, and Ben George, Intrust Bank Arena’s executive chef and a past Iron Chef champion.  People at the market can watch all the action. They can’t taste the food, sadly, but it’s still fun to watch.

    Judges this year; The Wichita Eagles food writer Denise Neil, local wine and food experts Guy and Beth Bower and longtime market manager Pat Randleas. The chefs will find out what the secret ingredient is at 8:30 a.m., and we should choose the winner between 9:30 and 9:45 a.m.   Learn More

    My guest this week is Susan Branch who is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of her first book “Heart of the Home” with an new and updated version.

    With an emphasis on simple preparation and fresh foods, Susan Branch has created the perfect combination of illustration and prose and a celebration of food sure to become a classic of homespun delights. Susan Branch wrote the book completely written by hand and illustrated it with charming and beautiful color watercolors.

    Susan Branch was born in Southern California but calls her 1849 home on the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard her “heart magnet” because she was drawn to New England from childhood and loved it before she laid eyes on it. She finally moved there in her early 30’s, no longer “able to live without four seasons and white picket fences as everyday architecture.” She is the oldest of eight children and inspired by “almost everything.” Her hand-lettered and watercolored Heart of the Home series of books are a reflection of the things she loves to celebrate, the home-arts of cooking, gardening, homemaking, family, best friends, entertaining, and the little things that make life sweet. Her newest book, A FINE ROMANCE ~ Falling in Love with the English Countryside, is a diary of her two-month jaunt through the back roads of England in search of her literary and artistic roots.     2013 William Cole Carménère – Columbine Reserve, Colchagua Valley Chile

The nose offers aromas of white pepper, dill, nutmeg and red fruits such as blackberries, mixed with soft notes of vanilla from French oak aging. The acidity is balance in this full-bodied making it a good candidate for cellaring and beef stews or Chilean food like empanadas and pastel de choclo.  Recommended serving temperature between 16-18°C.
