Mar 24 – Washington Wine Month & more

Don’t forget it’s Washington Wine Month and at Jacob Liquor Exchange there is a great display of Washington Wine to tempt your taste buds.  Due to some last minute Schedule changes and my flight to San Fran for a week in Sonoma, the wine I planned on featuring this week is going to have to stand alone.

2016 Nine Hats Benches Vineyard Pinot Gris
Sourced exclusively from The Benches Vineyard at Wallula (1,400 feet above the Columbia River), where a constant breeze moderates temperatures to capture fresh flavors and give the wine its vibrant mouthfeel. A light squeeze of the grapes on the press and a cool fermentation is used to enhance the Pinot Gris’ racy character. Appealing floral aromas lead to flavors of apricot, grapefruit, honey dew melon and lime zest with a hint of spice. The wine’s viscous mouth feel is balanced nicely by its crisp acidity.

Pick up a bottle at Jacob Liquor on North Rock Road…you’ll thank me!

The program running for this Saturday originally aired on January 20.  My guest is Debra Mathy from Dutcher Crossing Winery in Sonoma.
Her wines aren’t yet available here in Kansas but can be ordered on line.

Dutcher Crossing Winery represents an authentic and enjoyable experience for wine-lovers who visit the beautiful Dry Creek Valley. The perfect blend of award-winning wines, gorgeous wine country views and warm hospitality await visitors.

Proprietor Debra Mathy can often be found welcoming guests with Dutchess, her Golden Lab, sidekick and official greeter. Winemaker Kerry Damskey’s small-lot, select vineyard approach to winemaking can be learned and enjoyed in the tasting room. In short, Dutcher Crossing offers the timeless qualities of an artisan approach to life.  Check out Dutcher Crossing on Facebook & Twitter

Mar 17 – St. Patrick’s Day Party

If you missed it LIVE… Click here to listen or download this show!  Show files are listed by date and the 4 segments are in reverse order.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  LIVE from Insight Real Estate Group Northwest of the circle/clock tower in the historic Delano district for the 12th Annual St. Patrick’s day parade.

First up is Ali Rosen with her new book “Bring It! – Tried and True Recipes for Potlucks and Casual Entertaining.”

Bring It! is the ultimate source for potluck, picnic, or dinner party-worthy dishes that combine simple prep with big taste!

The word “potluck” may inspire memories of church dinners and mystery covered dishes. But today’s potlucks are essentially outsourced dinner parties, which make gathering around a shared table a cinch. Inside Bring It!, you will find dozens of impressive-looking recipes that come together easily, and are perfect for carrying to any occasion.

Author Ali Rosen has put a long career in the food world to use, drawing on chef and restaurant secrets for easy dishes that will have friends begging for the recipe. Must-have dishes include:

* Pimento Cheese and Crab Dip
* Snap Pea Salad with Parmesan and Bacon
* Pistachio and Anchovy Pasta
* Short Ribs with Quick Pickled Shallots
* S’mores Bars

Each recipe includes a note called “How to Bring It,” for make-ahead, reheating, and transport instructions. Flavors are designed for maximum impact, but won’t take hours to cook, or require special ingredients. Have dinner with the neighbors, sit down to a picnic in the park, or bring a dish to the school luncheon. They come together easily, hold well, and travel beautifully. They’ll have you rethinking the potluck.

Ali Rosen is the founder and host of Potluck with Ali Rosen, a television show and website dedicated to sharing the best and brightest in food. Potluck airs on NYC Life and its videos have appeared on HuffPost, Edible, and People. Ali was named as one of Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30 for Food & Drink. She has also written for sites including Bon Appétit, Epicurious, Fodor’s, and Refinery 29. Potluck was nominated for an Emmy as well as two IACP awards and Thrillist said Ali had one of the coolest jobs in food (she agrees). She is from Charleston, South Carolina, but currently lives in New York City.

Jameson Triple Distilled Irish Whiskey
Light gold in color, with a fairly light nose, there are notes of vanilla, subtle honey, and a hint of the smell of a pencil eraser. There’s a slight edge to the nose. The entry of Jameson is actually a little more flavorful than you’d expect. Then it’s all about the long lingering warm finish that requires some time and thought before you give in to another sip

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2016 King Estate Pinot Gris
The 2016 vintage is a gorgeous, mouth-watering example from another stellar Oregon growing season. This has a pale straw color with glistening edges. Aromas of ripe pear, fresh cantaloupe and honeysuckle fill the glass. Juicy flavors of just ripe pear, wild honey and pineapple are framed by a balance of viscous texture and clean, racy acidity.   I really like this wine and it shows the fine vintage and the talented wine making at the home of Pinot Gris in Oregon – King Estate.

Good Life Guy’s Wine of The Week: A Inexpensive School Night Red from Spain
2013 Garnacha de Feugo
The grapes come from old vines vineyards, 60-80 years-old, with yields of 2T/Ha and located high on the hillsides, 3,000 ft above sea level, around Calatayud. The vineyards are planted in principally decomposed slate and gravely clay soils. Even though there is very little rainfall in the region (around 350ml per year), the clay is at depth and allows for the vines to obtain moisture and be dry grown.

Critical Acclaim RP89 Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
The 2013 Garnacha de Fuego Red (a 10,000-case cuvée of 100% old-vine Garnacha) was aged in stainless steel for six months. A Spanish Grenache fruit-bomb, it offers loads of strawberry and cherry fruit intermixed with hints of earth, spice and pepper, silky tannins, and a medium-bodied, delicious, savory mouthfeel. Drink it over the next several years.

This is a good one!  Had the opportunity to spend some time with Chef Eric Gephardt, first at All Things BBQ for ka Friday night dinner on the grill with wine.  Then we met up in the studio and did this progarm.  It’s all about Eric and his journey in BBQ but more importantly we focus on one of the finest outdoor cooking tools to come around in a long time…The Kamado Joe.  This well made appliance comes in sizes to fit every outdoor cooking guru’s needs. It’s extremely well built, durable and easy to maintain.

Chef Eric is the Director of Culinary Inspiration at Kamado Joe and Lead Chef Instuctor at The Chef’s Academy NC.

This guy can grill shoe leather on a Kamado Joe and make it look and taste good.  So then you must ask…is it great quality shoe leather or really this amazing cooker.  I can tell you that starting with top quality meat is essential but that the Kamado Joe is really the answer.  Ultimate control for any grilling needs…slow and low, long duration cooking. High heat grilling, smoking most anything and all this with keeping super moisture content and long lasting heat.
