Aug 30 – This Week’s Show
We are just days away from the September 3rd Grand Opening of Kansas’ and Wichita’s first Whole Foods Market. If you have never been to a Whole Foods you may not understand all the excitement…that will change on your first visit to the corner of East 13th Street and Webb road next week!
From their web site: “Who are we? Well, we seek out the finest natural and organic foods available, maintain the strictest quality standards in the industry, and have an unshakeable commitment to sustainable agriculture. Add to that the excitement and fun we bring to shopping for groceries, and you start to get a sense of what we’re all about. Oh yeah, we’re a mission-driven company too. ”
Whole Foods Market was founded in Austin, Texas, when four local business people decided the natural foods industry was ready for a supermarket format. The founders John Mackey and Renee Lawson Hardy, owners of Safer Way Natural Foods, and Craig Weller and Mark Skiles, owners of Clarksville Natural Grocery. The original Whole Foods Market opened in 1980 with a staff of only 19 people. It was an immediate success. At the time, there were less than half a dozen natural food supermarkets in the United States. They’ve grown by leaps and bounds since that first store opened.
I’ll be talking to Rob Allen Prepared Foods Associate Coordinator about all the fun items on the menu for eating-in or for take home. Then it’s all about olives, cheese and more with guest John Balmer Specialty Foods Associate Coordinator. Finish up with a brief chat with David Bisek, Marketing and Communications manager and some of the vendors who will be filling the shelves at Wichita’s Whole Foods Market.

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2008 Callejon Del Crimen Petit Verdot Gran Reserva, Mendoza Argentina
Callejon del Crimen Petit Verdot Gran Reserva is the most dense and full-bodied of these wines. Powerful, structured, and packed with savory black fruits, it will require extended cellaring to reveal its full potential. It seems to have all the right stuff, so for those who think bigger is better, this is the wine for you. WA Score – 93. (Jay Miller, erobertparker.com, Dec. 2011)
A big aromatic rich wine with big tannin balanced with ripe fruit aroma and flavor enhanced with a little bottle age! Buy this soon, it won’t last…get it at Jacob Liquor on North Rock Road 🙂

Most likely, when you think about Malibu, vineyards are not what come to mind. Beach mansions filled with celebrities or surfers riding the waves are more typical images. However, tucked into the Santa Monica Mountains is one of Southern California’s best-kept secrets — the vineyards of Malibu. Due to the hidden hills and remote canyons, it is possible to drive through the mountains and never see these vineyards. But from one-half acre backyards to thousand acre estates, there are more than 50 independent vineyards in the area today. And, with the imminence of Southern California’s newest American Viticulture Area, the Malibu Coast AVA, it is finally time that Malibu’s soil and climate are recognized as unique in their ability to grow wine grapes of distinction.
A typical blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, this wine is a great value from a storied Chateau. Wine Spectator: “Features dark, roasted alder and mesquite notes mixed together, followed by juicy layers of linzer torte, blackberry pâte de fruit and plum sauce. The long, anise-framed finish displays a serious graphite spine for length and definition. Best from 2014 through 2020. 12,000 cases made. Score: 91. —James Molesworth, 2013.”

maker’s Tasting Notes: 77% Zinfandel, 9% Carignane, 8% Primitivo, 2% Alicante Bouschet, 2% Syrah, 1% Barbera, 1% Petite Sirah. Aromas of black cherry, plum and raspberry fruit combine with a beautiful hint of vanilla-oak loveliness, smoothly textured in mouth, very creamy and round, the finish is long and has lush jammy fruit — this wine is dangerously good! Remember – you are what you drink ….
