I love talking about great products that are healthy, taste great and have a good story!

    Justin Anderson and WOATS

WOATS Oatsnack is an indulgent snack made with an irresistible blend of gently baked whole grain oats, honey and other premium ingredients. Perfect anytime, anywhere, right out of the bag. True to the ambitions of our young founder, the mission of WOATS Oatsnack is to inspire kids and young adults to discover and harness their passions, make a difference in their communities and change the world for the better.

    Justin’s Story:
“My love affair with the humble oat began at an early age. I enjoyed snacking on granola but the crunchy stuff was tough on my braces. Craving a softer snack, I took over my Mom’s kitchen, mixed together some oats, honey and nuts and after several batches baked up the perfect recipe. It was such a huge hit with my friends that I borrowed $500 from my grandmother and by the time I was sixteen had started a company. www.woats.com

As I’ve grown older my tastes have changed but I’m still a kid at heart. WOATS Oatsnack is the ideal combination of natural goodness and indulgent fun that I like to call inspired snacking.

I was raised in humble circumstances by my mom and grandparents who always supported my education and encouraged me to follow my dreams. Thanks to their unconditional love, a lot of hard work and a little luck, I’m fortunate today to be able to do my thing and share my story with kids across America.”

The show today is all about a “Gumption – Taking Bubba Gump from Movie to Restaurant”  A great book by my guest Scott Barnett, Founding CEO of Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.  If you have ever worked in the restaurant business or for that matter eaten in a restaurant this book is a must read.

Written in a cinematic style, this book is about the creation, growth, and sale of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. The concept began when Paramount Pictures reached out to see if there was interest in creating a restaurant based on the movie Forrest Gump. It is also the personal story of the author’s growth as a CEO and creator of restaurant concepts. A host of situations are described such as restaurant concept creation, high stakes boardroom confrontations, and escaping corrupt officials in foreign lands. The narrative is partly an unvarnished peak behind the everyday scenes of restaurants, movie studios, and Wall Street. There is also an almost step-by-step recounting of how the Bubba Gump concept and others were created and operated. Lessons can be learned on unorthodox methods used in moving from traditional approaches to untried ways of doing business.

In the second half I’ll be speaking to Ted Plemons, Co-owner/partner of Cass Vineyard & Winery located in Paso Robles.

cass_logo_wArtCass Vineyard and Winery is located in the rolling, oak-studded hills between Paso Robles and Creston on California’s beautiful Central Coast. This area that the vineyard calls home offers quiet serenity for the visitor and an ideal growing environment for wine grapes.

Sited due east of the “Templeton Gap”, the vineyards receive the evening’s cooling breezes that the west side of Paso Robles is noted for. The vineyards rest far enough from the coast to generate the heat needed to optimally ripen the Rhone varieties grown on the 145 acre estate.

Cass wines were some of my top picks while in Paso last May attending a media event.  The Cass 2014 Viognier was my top white wine tasted that week.  I must have good taste…this wine recently received Double Gold and “BEST Viognier” at the San Francisco International Wine Competition. We’ll tell you all about the winery, vineyards and wines produced.

While Cass wines are not yet available here in Kansas (hopefully coming soon to a wine store near you!) you can order on line at www.casswines.com

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:

July 4 – Andy Groneman BBQ + Terra d’Oro wines

    Happy Independence Day!

For me, This great day is all about cooking outside on what ever grilling equipment you may have.  Andy Groneman “Pitmaster Extraordinaire”  and the All Things BBQ cooking instructor, joins us to talk tactics and techniques for a number of different styles of BBQ.  Slow roasted pork, smoked brisket, steaks on the grill, you name it. As they say at All Things BBQ…this is Where Barbeque Legends are made!

Smoke on Wheels Competition BBQ pitmaster Andy Groneman has been part of the Competition BBQ world for 20 years. A second generation pitmaster, Andy started his BBQ journey with the HoDeDo’s BBQ team, to spend time with his dad, George; backing his Uncle, Tom Groneman and Bob Eickhoff in the pits. By 1996, Andy wanted to cook more than the HoDeDo’s could schedule, so Smoke on Wheels was born with his brother in law, Matt Winterscheid. Since then Smoke on Wheels has earned hundreds of BBQ awards, including the Empire State championship, 20 Grand Championships, and 2 ‘Chest to Chest’ Brisket Invitational awards – including 2012. In 2009, Smoke on Wheels closed the season ranked 5th in the nation out of 4700+ teams. For 2010, Andy decided to dip his toe into the BBQ products arena with the launch of his two marinades. Smoke on Wheels BBQ Marinade, and Smoke on Wheels Pork injection and marinade. Both products have helped teams take their competitive BBQ to the next level! Andy has made BBQ a family affair, cooking 20-30 weekends each year in competition, along with his wife, Kim, and two girls Kaylin and Lauren. Both girls enjoy time behind the grill with their dad, and competing on their own in Kid’s Ques. They have both been champions in the 2012 season! Outside of BBQ, Andy is a Solutions Engineer for Sprint, with 14 years in Telecommunications. Currently, specializing in wireless and hosted/cloud computing solutions.

    Guy & Chris Leamy

If you take time to cook high quality Que’ you have to pair it with some high quality wines!   My friend Chris Leamy, winemaker at Terra d’Oro winery in Amador County will join us in the second half.  We’ll tell you all about the winery, vineyards, products produced and available here in the flat lands.  Having judged at the El Dorado County (California) Fair Commercial Wine Competition in May, I got to see first hand the magic in the bottle from Chris’ wine making skill.  Wait till you here about the awards he brought home just from this competition alone.

Terra d’Oro wines were first released in 1973 under the Montevina label, the first Amador County winery to produce wine since Prohibition ended. We quickly earned a reputation for crafting robust, full-flavored red wines, Zinfandel and Barbera in particular. Word spread, and a short time later, Amador’s historic wine industry was revived.

“With 400 acres of magnificent estate vines—including several historic, old-vine vineyards—Terra d’Oro Winery now produces uncommonly delicious Zinfandel, Barbera, Sangiovese, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Pinot Grigio and Moscato. We’re incredibly fortunate to be part of the long history established here more than 150 years ago.”

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
Some Killer Juice from Terra d’Oro

    2014 Terra d’Oro Chenin Blanc & Viognier
