Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
The Wines of Benovia with my good friend Bob Cooley VP for Marketing at Benovia

The Wine Advocate says – “There are approximately 12,000 cases of the NV Christo Lot 3, which is a hedonistic blend of Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah and a touch of Viognier to uplift the aromatics. This is, again, aged in neutral oak for two years and a blend of three vintages: 2011, 2012 and 2013. A wine of exceptional purity and intensity and plenty of character, as this one is 70% Syrah and the rest the other three grapes. It tips the scales at a lofty 15.3% alcohol, but it’s well hidden behind a cascade of blackberry and cassis fruit, roasted meats, steak tartare, licorice and Provençal herbs. It’s a big boy, and that’s exactly the way they want it. This wine should drink well for 7-8 years, but it’s meant to be consumed in its exuberant youthfulness.” WA91

“The straight 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is outstanding. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, native fermented, aged in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it’s a killer value that has lots of blue fruits, violets, graphite and leafy herbs in medium to full-bodied, concentrated, layered style. Savvy readers should buy a case of this and drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years, although I see no reason that it won’t keep longer either.”

The grapes are 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. All of the grapes are hand harvested and vinified traditionally, in temperature-regulated stainless steel vats, with a long final maceration process. The wine is aged 12 months in barrique, 25% new.

337 Cabernet Sauvignon exudes vibrant aromas of black cherry, ripe currant, fresh herbs and lightly roasted coffee. Smooth tannins and balanced acidity support core flavors of blackberry, black cherry and chocolate, intertwined with spicy black pepper accents on the finish. This wine can be enjoyed on its own or with herb-roasted pork loin, baked chicken or barbecued steak and sautéed mushrooms.
