Apr 20 – Blackstone Griddles

Having to post this a little earlier than usual as I will be on the road.  Look below for the April 13 show.

This week I’ll be talking to Chef Nathan Lippy the Blackstone Customer Support, Marketing Guru and the famous Blackstone Griddle demo Chef. I have always enjoyed “Plancha’ style griddle cooking, first in Spain, later with my classy EVO gas cooker.  For several weeks now I have been back to griddle cooking on my new Blackstone 36″ griddle.  I like it so much I have given two of these to close relatives and built a LIVE auction package that included a 36” griddle and a South American Asado demo dinner with wine.   🙂  Follow Nathan on Twitter. Before Blackstone became the brand that thousands trust, our founders had a vision. A love for food, family, friends, and the great outdoors gave rise to an idea.   www.blackstoneproducts.com

With a dedication to excellence and culinary greatness, that vision became a reality in 2005 with our cornerstone product, the 36” Blackstone Griddle. Since 2005 we have grown considerably both in our product line and our expertise in this amazing world of griddle cooking.

We have partnered with pro chefs, backyard masters and the everyday home-cook to craft a product that meets our highest standards.  Our products are designed and engineered in the USA with the latest technology and innovation, but we are more than just another outdoor cooking appliance company.  Our main focus is on our consumers and designing quality products that yield the best results.

This is a great year round outdoor cooking appliance that is well built and fun to cook with.  We’ll tell you all about it on Saturday April 20th!

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2016 Cline Ancient Vines Zinfandel from Contra Costa County California
The 2016 Ancient Vines Zinfandel draws primarily from a wide selection of our oldest, most historic and shyest-bearing Zinfandel blocks in Contra Costa County which make  up 94% of this blend. These ancient, dry-farmed vineyards consistently produce fruit of stunning concentration. Lively and supple, with floral raspberry and fresh pepper aromas and sleekly appealing cherry and licorice flavors that glide lightly along the finish.

Wine Spectator 91
The 2016 Ancient Vines Zinfandel shows spicy, bright strawberry, with coffee and chocolate characters. Ripe fruit and soft tannins make this a mouth-coating rich vintage. Aging on new and used oak has lent this wine a subtle vanilla quality that nicely complements the explosive fruit notes. Enjoy now or cellar for 5 to 7 years.  #40 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2018

Apr 6 – Italy Eat Drink Travel :-)

Starting off the show and setting the Italian stage is food writer and cookbook author Elizabeth Minchilli with her latest release “The Italian Table – Creating festive meals for family and friends”  This book is truly The Italian Dinner Party Handbook!
Get a copy of this great book now

The Italian Table delivers both parts of the fantasy and reality of Italian meals as they would be eaten on location. Combining menus and recipes with visual experience and inspiration–as well as insight into the traditions of the food and celebrations–it serves as a practical resource that gives home cooks and hosts step-by-step guidance on how to re-create these fabulous meals at their own tables.

Menus and recipes include: Eating in the Market in Florence with Coward’s Spaghetti, Pappa al Pomodoro, and Apple Cake; A Sunday Lunch in Emilia-Romagna with Ricotta and Swiss Chard Tortelli, Vegetable Pie, and Stuffed Pork Roast; and A Table by the Sea in Positano with Mozzarella on Grilled Lemon Leaves, Squid and Walnut Salad, and Jackie O’s Spaghetti. With a resources section for Italian ingredients; headnotes brimming with interesting history, recipe shortcuts, and serving suggestions; and menu introductions detailing what to drink, how to set the table, and how to time the preparation and the party itself, this is an essential guide for home cooks and those who love to entertain.

Elizabeth Minchilli has written about food, style, and architecture from her home in Italy for the past 25 years. Her website, Elizabeth Minchilli in Rome (elizabethminchilli.com), won a Saveur Blog Award for Best Culinary Coverage, an Italy Magazine Best Food Blog Award, and was named The Culture Trip Local Favorite. Elizabeth is the author of eight books, including Eating My Way Through Italy. She is also the founder of the Eat Italy app. Her books, blogs, apps, and food tours have been praised by The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Travel & Leisure, NPR, The Huffington Post, Condé Nast Traveler, and more. Later in the program I’ll be talking to Judith Wencel and Chef Katharine Elder from Elderslie Farm about the latest at Elderslie Farm and more importantly about Poggio Verde Country Villa. Katharine’s Aunt Gretchen Romig (Wichita native and the villa owner) where you can plan a week of dining, sightseeing and sampling small-production wines.

“Is Northern Italy on your bucket list? Do you love good food and wine and gorgeous scenery? Does it sound divine to live “La Dolce Vita” in an 18th century Italian villa for a week? Do you like to be taken care of from the point of arrival to the point of departure?”

Aunt Gretchen says “WELCOME to Poggio Verde Country Villa! It is our great pleasure to share our beautifully-restored family villa with groups of eight to twelve visitors who would like to explore the wonders of Northern Italy and come “home” at the end of each day to make dinner together or enjoy a meal prepared by a local or visiting chef. Located between Milan and the Lakes, there are myriad opportunities for day trips to visit lakes, mountains, cities, hilltop villages and experience the art and culture and great food and wine of Northern Italy. Let us plan a trip for you or you can plan your own; or you can join an all-inclusive trip.”

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2016 Heredis Nebbiolo Langhe DOC
Nebbiolo is among the grapes with the longest roots, which can go as deep as 7 meters underground: that’s why this grape can capture the unique characteristics of its soil. Heredis is the best expression of the distinctive character of the Langhe. Its ruby red color tends to garnet as it ages, its aroma is gently fruity with spicy notes and its delicate, slightly tannic flavor is soft and velvety on the palate.

Mar 30 – “KR” Rombauer

Had the opportunity to spend time with Dave Zinni the Rombauer Midwest Representative and his new replacement this week and tasted some fine wine.  The Rombauer team is in the Midwest this week which provides an opportunity to talk to KR, son of the recently deceased Koerner Rombauer and head of Rombauer Vineyards.  Learn more at www.rombauer.com

KOERNER “KR” ROMBAUER III
KR got an early start in the wine business, helping his parents produce the first vintages of Rombauer wine at the age of 15. During summers and vacations throughout high school and college, KR worked in the cellar and helped build our St. Helena winery. After graduating, KR held production-related roles at the winery before moving into marketing and sales, and later, general manager. KR now serves on our board of directors. With a love for wine, food and family, KR has played an integral role in cultivating the success and recognition that Rombauer enjoys today. The Rombauer philosophy hasn’t changed since our founding in 1980: We believe in doing everything in our power to produce the best wines possible. With just three head winemakers in our 39-year history, we’ve achieved consistency of style — distinctive, fruit-driven wines — while continually refining and improving our winemaking practices. Richie Allen, our Director of Viticulture and Winemaking, embraces traditional and cutting-edge practices in the vineyard and cellar to make certain each wine gets the customized attention it needs.  Follow Rombauer Vineyards on Face Book & TwitterGood Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:

Mar 23 – BNutty Peanut Butter

My guests this week are Carol Podolak and Joy Thompkins the two entrepreneurs of BNutty Gourmet Peanut Butter.

Bnutty is a gourmet peanut butter company.  With 10 exciting flavors such as Irresistible Pretzel, Blissful Blueberry, Salted Caramel and S’mores – Bnutty has a unique and exciting take on peanut butter.  Starting with a honey roasted nut, this crunchy peanut butter snack has a satisfying texture and delicious flavor.  All flavors are available in 2 sizes; 12 oz jars and a 2 oz individual serving.  All products are gluten free.

“Our peanut butter is made using a freshly ground honey roasted peanut as opposed to the common lightly salted blanched peanut of past. We then have created various palate pleasing flavors using chocolates, berries, oats, honey and even marshmallows and pretzels! Packed with the protein found in the peanuts and lightly sweetened with a few chocolates or honey our snack is likened to eating a candy bar in a jar without the guilt and calories! We have 2oz for on the go, 8oz and 12oz sizes. We sell online and in various regional storefronts. Most unique, is our fundraising branch aimed at supporting children in their pursuit of happiness-sports, mission trips, you name it!”
