Oct 31 – Chasing Flavor

Cheers to a Happy & Safe Hallowine! 🙂

My guest this week is Chef Dan Kluger with his new book “Chasing Flavor – Techniques and Recipes to Cook Fearlessly.”

In his debut cookbook, James Beard Award–winning chef Dan Kluger shares 190 recipes to help home cooks master flavor and technique

Dan Kluger, a chef celebrated for his simple yet flavorful food, knows there’s more to mastering cooking than just following directions. So with each of the innovative, elegant recipes in his debut cookbook, he includes a valuable lesson that applies beyond the tasty dish. For example, master the art of mixing raw and cooked versions of the same ingredient while preparing a Sugar Snap Pea Salad with Manchego Vinaigrette.  From homemade pantry items to vegetable mains, meats, and grains, this book is not just sophisticated recipes but a master class of lessons for more flexibility and innovation in the kitchen.  www.dankluger.com  @dan_kluger

What a joy to behold the flourishing career of Dan Kluger, who has worked so diligently to translate his passion for hospitality into becoming one of the most exciting culinary figures in his field. Dan spent years studying with the best, and now the best wants to cook at his side—and you can, too, with Chasing Flavor. This is gutsy, earthy, soul-satisfying cooking, bursting with confidence and flavor, and the straightforward recipes will make you a hero in your home kitchen.”

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2017 Real De Aragon Garnacha, Bodegas Langa Calatayud Spain
100% Organic Garnacha fermented in concrete vats then aged 6 months in American oak barrels.  The aroma of toasted spice with vanilla and cinnamon carry through in the mouth with Jammy cherry and plum.  Full=bodied with good acidity balanced by soft tannin.

These old vines make for a very compelling and richly expressed garnacha with dark-berry and plum aromas, as well as rich, earthy notes. The palate has a very succulent, fresh and juicy feel with a very seductive combination of velvety tannins and deep fruit flavors. Super grenache. Amazing value. Drink or hold.James Suckling 93 pts

Oct 24 – Poppy in the Wild

My guest this week is author and dog lover Teresa Rhyne author of Poppy in the Wild: A Lost Dog, Fifteen Hundred Acres of Wilderness, and the Dogged Determination that Brought Her Home.

While not directly related to food and wine…Guy loves dogs and anyone who feels the same.

After losing her beloved beagle Daphne to lymphoma, author Teresa Rhyne launches herself into fostering other dogs in need, including Poppy, a small, frightened beagle rescued from the China dog meat trade. The elation of rescue quickly turns to hysteria when Poppy breaks free from a potential adopter during a torrential thunderstorm and disappears into a rugged, mountainous, 1,500 acre wilderness park, bordered by a busy road.

In the quest to find Poppy, Teresa will work with rescue specialists, volunteers, psychics, a Native American who communes with owls, helpful neighbors, decidedly unhelpful strangers, a howling woman, the police, crushing dead ends, glimmers of hope, and her own emotional and physical limits as she sits in the wind and rain in the wilderness park for hours each dusk and dawn with bags of roasted chicken and her dirty socks, the human lure for a terrified beagle and packs of less terrified coyotes.

Meanwhile, Poppy encounters heavy rains, a homeless encampment, the Sheriff and his wife, a series of strangers, speeding traffic, hawks, and, ultimately, a world of people willing to do anything to protect rather than harm her. Through an unexpected late night encounter, Poppy is finally caught.  After her time in the wild, a surprisingly transformed Poppy reunites with Teresa. Now newly confident and brave Poppy is ready to be welcomed into her forever home.    Order a copy today!

Teresa Rhyne is an animal advocate and breast cancer survivor. She is also a humorous, accidentally inspirational speaker and the author the #1 New York Times bestseller, #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller, and USA Today bestseller “The Dog Lived (and So Will I)” a memoir of how she and her beagle overcame cancer. Her second book, “The Dogs Were Rescued (and So Was I)” is a sequel chronicling Teresa’s journey to a healthier, more compassionate lifestyle (inspired, as always, by her rescue dogs). Her third book is “Poppy In the Wild: a lost dog, 1500 acres of wilderness, and the dogged determination that brought her home.” Yeah, she likes dogs.  She lives in the Los Angeles area with her beagles.  Learn more about Teresa at: teresarhyne.com  Teresa is on Facebook and Twitter.

Dr. Loosen’s non-estate wine embodies the elegant and racy style of classic Mosel Riesling. It is refreshing and fruity, with a fine mineral edge that is typical of the region. Dr. L Riesling is made with fruit that comes exclusively from traditional vineyards with steep slopes and slate soil. Oct 17 – Rodney Strong Viineyards

This will be a fun and informative show!  Up first is Joe Stumpe, former Wichita Eagle food writer, musician extraordinaire and now the editor/publisher of Active Aging.  Active Aging is a free publication for readers in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties live healthy, fulfilling and active lives.  The publication and Joe are doing a holiday recipe contest and you should submit your best recipes!

Active Aging was first published at WSU in 1979. Its mission was to explore the issues and information needs of seniors. There were few resources then to connect them to programs and agencies that could help meet those needs.  www.theactiveage.com

Several years later the newspaper moved to Friends University. In 2000 its connection with Friends was dissolved. We became an independent entity and moved to our current location at 125 S. West St.  That informational vision in 1978 has evolved to today’s 501(c)(3) not-for-profit newspaper. Back then, we mailed free to some 30,000 50+ readers in Sedgwick, Harvey and Butler counties. Now, we print more than 60,000 papers a month.  To Get the Paper Call 316-942-5385 Or Email joe@theactiveage.com

Then it’s all about WINE, and one of my favorite Sonoma producers Rodney Strong.

I’ll be talking to some friends from the winery about the history, vineyards and products produced.

The story began over 55 years ago, when a celebrated American dancer named Rod Strong settled in Sonoma County to pursue a second lifelong creative passion: winemaking. Rodney Strong Vineyards was the 13th winery bonded in the newly discovered Sonoma County wine industry. A trio of winemaking paths crossed when Rick Sayre joined the team as Winemaker in 1979, and again when the Klein Family, 4th generation California farmers, purchased the winery in 1989 and initiated a renewed commitment of modern artisan winemaking. Through the years, Rodney Strong Vineyards has earned the reputation for critically acclaimed Single Vineyard and Reserve wines, stand out Estate releases and best-in-class Sonoma County varietal wines.
