Discover the pleasures of cooking—and eating—with this French approach to everyday meals. Featured on bistro menus and dinner tables throughout France, the plat du jour is the centerpiece of a two-course meal, a formula that Susan Loomis cleverly presents here. By pairing substantial main dishes such as Boeuf Bourguignon, Poule au Pot, and Bouillabaisse, with just the right starter, side, and/or dessert, Plat du Jour makes getting dinner on the table as easy as un, deux, trois!

This is a long-awaited collection of classic recipes by Loomis, an American-born cooking teacher and author who resides in Paris. She has perfected these iconic dishes and shares what she’s discovered while living in France, cooking for family, friends, and students. In addition to the recipes, the cookbook includes helpful tips and intriguing details about French culinary history. It’s a must-have for any aspiring home cook with a craving for simple French cooking. Follow Susan on Facebook and Twitter

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2018 Pinot Society Santa Barbara County “The Tumult” Pinot Noir
This selection, The Tumult, comes from Santa Barbara County. Nestled in between two mountain ranges, the valley becomes flooded with cool air and fog from the tumultuous Pacific Ocean as it blows in through a gap in the western range.  Aromas of red berries open to sweet-tart flavors of Bing cherry and pomegranate, moderated by hints of bittersweet chocolate to create a balanced and complex wine. 14.5% ABV

Wine Enthusiast: 90
Violet, lilac and lavender aromas meet with boysenberry and sandalwood on the nose of this bottling. It’s well structured on the palate, blending fresh pomegranate, rose petal and strong wood flavors into a snappy expression.

Available at Jacob Liquor Exchange in Wichita or your local wine merchant 🙂

Feb 27 – Wine for Normal People

There was No Good Life show on February 20 due to WSU basketball!  🙁
Here’s the info for February 27th

My guest this week is Elizabeth Schneider to talk about her new book: “Wine for Normal People: A Guide for Real People Who Like Wine, but Not the Snobbery That Goes with It” and wine pairing in general.

There’s no better time for a glass of vino than now during COVID, but the wrong wine can lead to more whine than “whoa.” If you’re looking for sources on how to pair the best wine with a romantic meal, author, certified wine educator and Court of Master Sommelier-certified Elizabeth Schneider will give it to you straight.

In Wine for Normal People: A Guide for Real People Who Like Wine, but Not the Snobbery That Goes with It (Chronicle Books), Schneider gives real talk about wine without talking down to the audience and with a dash of humor to boot.

Schneider carries her knowledge, personality and wit over onto her Wine for Normal People podcast, which boasts 7 million unique downloads, placing it firmly in the top five percent of all podcasts produced in the United States.

“I was a normal wine person before I became a wine dork. I understand the struggles that people have with wine and why they don’t like it,” she explains. “Because of that, I can show them things that actually matter to them and that will shift their thinking to enjoy wine more.”

Elizabeth says: “After graduating from Wesleyan “University and starting my career in Boston, I quickly realized that my heart was more in my hobby than in my high tech job.  Trips to the wine shopr often yielded awesomely poor (but hilarious) results, so my sister and I finally took a course at the Boston Center for Adult Eduction to learn how to taste and appreciate wine.  And that kicked it all off.”

“A stint in St. John in the Caribbean to wait tables and just unwind for 8 months (yes, I quit my high-tech job, packed two bags, and hopped on a plane), was followed by a great two years completing my MBA at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (where I met M.C. Ice, my podcast partner and husband) and since then my career has been solely about wine!”  Follow Elizabeth on Facebook and Twitter

Later in the program, Ryan Frederickson founder of ArT wine Preservation system joins us to talk about this novel way to preserve your open bottle of wine.  ArT Wine Preserver® founder and Purdue University graduate Ryan Frederickson worked as an engineer until a vacation to wine country sent him in a different direction.

ArT Wine Preserver® is the easiest way to keep wine fresh. This simple wine saver uses pure argon gas to displace oxygen. Argon is the preferred method to prevent oxidation in wine.

Feb 13 – Diet for Great Sex

My first guest is Christine DeLozier L.Ac. author of Diet for Great Sex: Food for Male and Female Sexual Health  Order a copy today!

How do we ensure that our bodies experience optimal sexual function at any time? The answer lies in the very foods we eat. Great sex is certainly an experience of the mind. Within our bodies, though, it explodes when our nerves, blood vessels and hormones operate in synchrony. Modern research has shown that diet affects this trifecta of great sex. It can increase or thwart pleasure. Hormones. Nerve pathways. Blood flow. We must care for the biological design of our bodies and diet affects sex.

A great deal of clinical research demonstrates that certain eating habits increase blood flow to the genitals, balance sex hormones and help nerves to be most responsive to our partner’s touch. Ancient Chinese medicine has always known this. Through diet and lifestyle, we can restore balance to yin and yang—and nurture the essences of sex. We will explore diet as it relates to sexual function and pleasure for males and females. When our bodies are well-nourished, desire comes naturally, pleasure comes naturally, and orgasm is effortless. With DIET FOR GREAT SEX, you’ll unlock the secret to eating for sexual pleasure.

Who should read Diet for Great Sex? Anyone who would like to have the best sex possible, through the most natural means possible. This includes people who already have great sex and want to keep it that way, as well as those who want it to be better. In a great sex action plan, everything comes together with delicious recipes, meal plans, sample menus and a dietary planner. Also included is a date-night sex menu for a night of passion and better blood flow. In addition, detailed tips for pleasing your partner through oral sex are provided. This book uses scientific evidence to uncover the best dietary habits for great sex, merging modern science with traditional Chinese medicine, a centuries-long guide to better sexual function. With yin and yang in harmony, we can bring out all that is possible from our own sensual physiology. www.christinedelozier.com

Last but not least, I’ll share some of the history and production of one of Napa’s most revered wineries.  Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent forty years establishing itself as one of North America’s premier producers of Napa Valley wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence that continues today.  www.duckhorn.com

Jan 30 – Diets Obsolete

Originally scheduled for Jan 23, Pre-empted for WSU Basketball

My first guest this week is Deborah Kesten, co-author with Larry Scherwitz of “Whole Person Integrative Eating – A Breakthrough Dietary Lifestyle to Treat the Root Causes of Overeating, Overweight, and Obesity.”

Winner of the 2020 Book Excellence Award in the Health Category

A Holistic, Science-Backed Program to Help You Build a Healthier Relationship to Food, Eating and Weight!

Do you suffer from chronic overeating and have concerns about your weight?  Are you looking for a scientifically sound way of eating to prevent, even reverse, food-related chronic conditions, such as obesity, heart disease, depression and more?  Are you ready to treat the root causes of being overweight and pave the way to a happier and healthier relationship to food, eating, and weight?  This book is for you.

Holistic nutrition researcher Deborah Kesten, M.P.H., and behavioral scientist Larry Scherwitz, Ph.D., offer documented proof that it is possible to overcome overeating and being overweight by nourishing yourself multi-dimensionally each time you eat. Combining ancient food wisdom with groundbreaking modern science, Whole Person Integrative Eating empowers you to discover the reasons you overeat and gain weight – while offering the Whole Person Integrative Eating (WPIE) antidotes: physical, emotional, spiritual and social nourishment.

Through a powerful self-assessment quiz, you’ll identify your overeating styles, then build a personalized plan to create a new, healthy way of eating. Plus, you’ll discover 30 delicious recipes based on the Whole Person Integrative Eating program to jumpstart your optimal-eating efforts.

WPIE will inspire you to transform your relationship to food, eating, and weight by empowering you to discover true nourishment-physical, emotional, spiritual, and social-each time you eat…for life.

In the second half I’ll be talking to a talented inventor/Entrepreneur, Kendall Buck.  This Stetson University student has invented a simple yet unique kitchen tool for anyone who uses fresh herbs.  The Herbie Rake is a handy way to strip fresh herbs off of the stems.
Kendall’s KickStarter site.

Kendall says: “For those of you who use fresh herbs, you know it is a tedious task to have to individually separate each leaf from the stem. In fact, it can discourage people from using fresh herbs altogether. My name is Kendall Buck and the first product I have designed is Herbie Rake. Herbie Rake is an easy to use kitchen tool that makes cooking fun and efficient.”  Get one NOW at www.herbierake.com

I’ll tell you all about Kansas Day January 29th and how you can get involved.
Kansas Day is a holiday which is celebrated every year on January 29th. The purpose of this holiday is to commemorate the 1861 admission of Kansas into the United States. It is also a holiday which allows citizens of Kansas to rejoice and take pride in the state in which they live. This holiday has been celebrated since the 19th century.

This year, Kansas Day will be a celebration of everything that makes Kansas special. Please join the Kansas Tourism Division in celebrating Kansas Day by posting your own tribute to the 34th state to your Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.  Learn more here.

The Kansas state motto To The Stars Through Difficulties lives beyond the state seal. It is emblazoned on our souls. It is the thread that connects the fabric of Kansas. We were made by hands that toiled in the unforgiving land and forged on the belief that freedom is our greatest calling. We celebrate everyone and everything that makes Kansas. The Kansas experience is a salute to the real, to the rowdy, to
the wide-eyed wanderer. To the stars.  Visit www.travelks.com
