    Aug 10 – 1881 Napa & Bumping Down Highways!

My first guest this week is the legendary wine guru Jean-Charles Boisett to talk about his new Wine History Museum and Tasting Salon.

1881 Napa, Napa Valley’s first wine history museum and tasting salon, is now open. Jean-Charles Boisset, proprietor of Boisset Collection, has created an homage to Napa Valley, with a tasting room that showcases wines from Napa Valley’s distinct sub-appellations, a museum where guests can explore Napa rich wine history, an extensive collection of historic wine relics from Europe and the United States and original artifacts from the Early California Wine Trade Archive. 1881 Napa is located in a historic Victorian home built in 1874 next to Oakville Grocery (founded in 1881) in Oakville, California, both of which were purchased by Boisset Collection at the beginning of the year.

Jean-Charles Boisset was born into the world of wine in the village of Vougeot, Burgundy, France. His lifelong passion for wine began as a child, growing up above the cellars and within view of the centuries-old vineyards of Château du Clos Vougeot, the epicenter and birthplace of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  Learn more about 1881 Napa!  Follow 1881 Napa on Twitter

“Napa Valley has a powerful place in American wine history and 1881 Napa puts the region in perspective on the world stage,” said Boisset, who grew up in Burgundy, France imbued with a passion for wine and learning as the son of vintners and the grandson of educators. “An extraordinary amount has been accomplished in this enclave in a short amount of time and we want to create a destination that celebrates Napa’s long history and its pioneering founders while exploring Napa’s incredibly diverse terroir in one destination.”

His parents, Jean-Claude and Claudine, founded the family winery in 1961 with an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit in one of the most traditional winegrowing regions in the world. Today, the family collection includes wineries that share more than 18 centuries of combined winemaking heritage and tradition in some of the world’s most prestigious terroirs, from Burgundy to the South of France, to California’s Napa Valley and Russian River Valley.

A fashion icon and innovative character, Jean-Charles continues to add his creative touch to the many wineries he has acquired in California. 1881 Napa is just another step in the many things he has done to enhance the enjoyment of wine in Napa.  He and his wife world renowned winemaker Gina Gallo live in the beautiful estate that was the home of Robert and Margrit Mondavi.  Follow JCB on FaceBook & Twitter

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
2015 Château des Aladères Selection Vielles Vignes

One of the labels put out by Chateau de Lastours, a vast, 2,100-acre estate in Corbieres owned by the Allard family of Chateau Laroque in Saint-Emilion. Working with consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, the team put out a succulent Corbieres from their oldest vines in 2015, a blend of 45 % carignan with 35% grenache and 20% syrah. Fermented entirely in stainless steel, it retains a cool freshness, pure purple fruit suffused with violet notes and a sense of mineral firmness. The tannins hold it fast, suggesting this will age well over the next few years, though it’s also approachable now, with lamb chops or most any meats off the grill. (Jun 2018)

Something FUN that fits nicely in the Porto Vino Wine Tote 🙂

Later in the program Tom Brown proprietor of Meadowlark Farm in Rose Hill will join us to talk about the Farm and the varieties of peaches being offered now to the crowds of You-Pick enthusiasts.  Meadowlark Farm is on Face Book.

Since 2010 Tom and wife Gina have planted about 2000 peach trees and about 1000 apple trees.  We planted many varieties of both, hoping that some would always flourish in the vagaries of the Kansas prairie climate.  We also raise about 2 acres of strawberries which are harvested in May and June. We sell what we grow at our farm  and Old Town Farmers Market in Wichita. We welcome visitors to the farm throughout the growing season.  We offer pick-your-own peaches and apples as well as vegetables from June through October.  We also have a pumpkin patch and corn maze in October.  We want folks to come out to the farm for fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables and then feel free to stay for a picnic or a walk through the orchard.   Tom’s hard cider is a must try adult beverage and is available at the Farm as well as most of Wichita’s local breweries.  😉

Good Life Guy’s Wine of the Week:
    Meadowlark Farm Hard Cider
Hard Cider is legally a fruit wine; produced by fermenting fresh apple juice with specially selected cider yeast, and managing the fermentation to produce a refreshing and bubbly drink with an alcohol content of around 5%.  Mewdowlark Farm’s hard cider is lightly carbonated and is sold in 12oz capped bottles.  It is best enjoyed chilled poured into a large Bordeaux wine glass or something similar that allows the cider’s fruit aroma to collect just inside the rim of the glass.

    • Meadowlark Red:  A sweet hard cider with lots of apple flavor; great as an aperitif or with dessert
    • Meadowlark Gold: A semi – dry and crisp hard cider with a subtle apple flavor; excellent with fish and chicken or paired with cheese and fresh bread.
    • Meadow Hopper:  A very dry, citric, thirst quenching refreshment.  As hopped as an IPA but over an austere fruit wine structure.
    • Meadowlark Peach:  Our Hard Cider blended with peach wine that we crafted from our own peaches.  A perfect,  summery blend of apple with a strong, fresh peach aroma.

From those humble beginnings, an international grilling revolution was born. 2017 Granite Hill Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, Lodi California
The 2017 vintage displays aromas of dark cherries and toasted vanilla oak, followed up with flavors of black currants, blueberries, sweet raspberry and slight hint of tobacco and spice. The finish is lingering and flavorful with red currants and oak.  This is a great wine with most any grilled meat off the Weber.
