My first guest this week is David George CEO of Joy Cone Company, first class ice cream cones.  Joy is the world’s largest ice cream cone manufacturer and has been mixing, baking and packaging ice cream cones at a sugar-scented factory in northern Arizona since 2000. Today, the Flagstaff facility produces up to 1.2 million cake, sugar and waffle cones daily.  Learn more at www.joycone.com

In 1918, Lebanese immigrant, Albert George, along with other family members, bought some second-hand cone-baking machines and started the George & Thomas Cone Company. Today, that company is still owned/operated by the George family along with the employees. As such, the company is now known as Joy Cone Company, after its signature brand of ice cream cones. It is the largest ice cream cone company in the world, baking over 1.5 billion cones/year.

We are an independent, 100% employee owned business, practicing the art of cone baking for 100 years.

Joy Cone Company also has a $20 million, 112,000 sq. ft. facility in Hermitage Pennsylvania, and the employees are excited. Why? Because they own the company.  Several years ago Joy Cone Company transitioned to an Employee Stock Option Plan. The company is now a 100% employee owned business.

“While there are a number of reasons for our success,” David says, “perhaps the most important has been our dedicated work force. Over the years, we have invested a lot of money in buildings, ovens, and equipment, but if you don’t have the right people in place, all of that does not matter.”  Joy Cone is on Facebook!

If you have great cones, you need something special to put in them
In the second half I’ll be talking to Kendra Burkey owner and quality ice cream maker at “Salted Creamery.”

From Salted Caramel to Cookies ‘n’ Cream, Berry Cheesecake to S’Mores, Salted Creamery is dedicated to creating the most vivid flavors you can find. Made in North Newton, Salted specializes in small batch ice cream and sorbets, sourcing many of their ingredients from local vendors and farmers.
